Photo Scanning of Photo albums, Documents or other Special Requirements.
We scan photos whilst still in the albums where possible and in strict order. We can also return
photos to their original containers. A3 Scanning is also available. The additional cost vary
depending on the labour time involved so its best to call. Also read the info below as there a lot
that help clarify things for you and save you money.
How to decide what photos to get scanned and what to leave out.
Luckily with photos you can see the image unlike negatives. Choose images that have content of
worth to you. Scenery shots unless of great quality may not be worth it unless people are included.
See if the image is sharp (in focus) if it look blurred that how it be in digital form. Faded or photos
with colour castes can be corrected using our professional service. See slideshow above & below.
Duplicates can be a real problem. Back in the 70-80s getting 2 sets of prints was common and they
may be scattered throughout you piles of images, remember we scan whatever you supply! Also
the photo finish makes a difference see next tip.
Glossy versus Satin Prints, which is better?
Without a doubt glossy are superior for scanning they have richer colour, more detail and no
indentations which cause light reflections in dark areas. so if you have a choice choose glossy. the
slide show below shows the dents.
How are my photo files named? Can I match file names to the actual photos?
We name your images PICT_001 PICT_002 etc. If we are returning them in our zip lock bags they
will be in order & each zip lock bag has the the start and finish image (eg PICT_101 to PICT_200).
If we are returning them in there original containers or albums they are again labelled the start and
finish image (eg PICT 221 to 287).
How do you deal with photos in albums, should I remove them ?
From a cost and scanning view point removing is better. However that may not be possible it might
not be your album and there might be titles on the page next to each photo. So if you do need to
keep them in the album here are the questions we normally ask.
•
Is the photo under clear plastic? If it is that should be removed or reflections can cause issues.
Unfortunately once removed, normally it won’t stick back down and the photo may fall out.
•
Does the album come apart? If it does are the pages less than 31cm x 22cm in size A4 size.
We do have a large A3 scanner buts its quality is not as good so we try not to use it for
extensive scanning.
•
Are the photos in straight? If they are on angles cropping them becomes tedious and thus extra
expense. So call me once you checked the above queries so we can go through the options.
•
PPI/DPI (pixels/dots per inch) determines the detail in your image. PPI/DPI of about
600 is optimum less means your losing details more will improve the resolution on some photos
but increases the cost as most photos were printed at 300 DPI/PPI this is the sweet spot.
We do offer 1200 ppi scanning for high res images if you require it.
Optical V Interpolated. Optical PPI means the actual pixel resolution the scanner used in
making your image. Interpolated means it was scanned at a lower PPI then just up sized in
software this is a cheat to save time & I hope no one in the industry is using it. That’s why we
state true optical PPI

Image Enhancement: This includes getting the brightness & contrast correct, removing
colour castes eg a purple tinge, bringing up detail in darker regions. There are two methods.
1:Automated Software sometimes it gets it right, sometimes not. For example a white
wedding dress against a lot of dark foliage. Auto often says that picture is too dark and boost
the brightness washing out all detail in the dress but the shrub looks great. Once its gone it can
not be restored!
2: Manual (human) a technician uses their eyes to look at the content of your image and
knowing what’s important adjusts it to get the best result. Making peoples faces in the shadows
viewable, removing say a green tinge so skin tones are correct, enriching the colour where it
has faded.
•
Cropping is the process of electronically trimming the photo edges so no white borders or
rough edges are left. If your photo has writing or printed text in the border it is included.
